Do you want to add or remove programs?

Windows XP Professional

How do you do that, add or remove programs?
Almost everyone has installed a program once. Often a program has a wizard to help you installing the software. Most of the wizards can be finished just to click next, next, next and finish. The programs will normally be installed in 'C:Program FilesName of the program'.

But how to remove the software if you don’t need the program anymore?

A lot of people think they only have to remove the software in the 'C:Program Files' folder and think that now the software has been removed.
Actually this is first of all most of the times not true and secondly the folder can often not be removed because it is already in use by the system.

Remove software complete

To remove a program properly you have to remove it from the 'Add or Remove Programs' list which can be found in the Control Panel.I will explain how to remove software properly and what you can do even more with the the add or remove function.

Step 1:
Click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> Add or remove Programs.
The next screen is shown.

Step 2:
Here are all installed programs listed. You can what the size of the program is on the right.
To remove a program you just simply click on a program and there will appear one ore sometimes two buttons on the right to 'change' something about the program or to remove the program.

Step 3:
To remove the program click the 'Remove' button.
To changes something (if possible for that particular program) click the 'Change' button.

Now the program will be completely removed from your computer. The difference with just deleting the program folder in C:Program Files is that almost every program installs not only in that folder but also in the Windows directory and in the Windows register. If you remove the software from the above list, it will also delete these files and then the program is completely removed.

Other functions on this screen.

Add New Programs
If you want to install new programs, most of the time you just insert the cd-rom and a wizard will be started.

If not, you can click on this screen the 'Add new Programs' button to add new software.
The next screen is shown.

Here you can add programs which are on a cd / dvd or on a floppy drive.
Further you can use the 'Windows Update' button to update Windows.

Add/Remove Windows Components

Within this function you can not add or remove programs but you can add or remove Windows components. For example if you want to remove the Windows Messenger or you want to remove the media player because you use another music player.
You can also add some Windows components which are default not installed, like a web server or a FTP server. (You need your Windows XP cd to install components)

If you click the 'Add/Remove Windows Components button, the next screen is shown.

Here you can add or remove Windows Components like the Media Player or install the service for a web server or a FTP server.

You simply click on a component you wish to be installed or removed and click the 'Details' button if possible.
By checking the checkbox in front of a program this program will be installed.

By removing the √ in the checkbox the program or service will be removed.

As simple is that!

Set Program Access and Defaults
