There are several monitors available on the market. Small ones, large ones, flat ones, heavy ones etcetera. If you are looking for a one you must consider for what purpose it will be used for. For example if you have a television card in your computer and you want to watch television on your computer you should choose one with a large screen so you can sit back on the couch and watch television. If you don’t have much space for a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) you should choose a flat screen like a TFT screen. There are several sizes of the screen. Most common sizes are 15 inch, 17 inch and 19 inch screens but there are also larger sizes like 21 inch or larger.
The size is being measured diagonally like shown in the picture below.
As I said there are several monitors available on the market. The differences between these will be described below.
CRT Monitor This one is heavy and thick and has a normal tube. Because of this normal tube you could get a glare on the tube from light sources within the room. That could be irritating so that’s why they developed the flat CRT screen which has a flat tube.
Flat CRT This one is also heavy and thick but this one has a flat tube. Flat CRT screens are designed to reduce the glare and distortion created by conventional CRT screens. The flat tube increases image clarity while reducing glare from light sources within the room.
LCD
LCD (Liquide Crystal Display) screens are most commonly used for laptop screens but are becoming increasingly popular and more affordable for desktop users. These screens use a TFT (thin film transmitter) to produce a more secure picture with a relatively wide angle of view. TFT provides the best resolution of all of the flat panel technologies. These are the most expensive screens on the market. Also these are available in several sizes.
Summary If you decide to buy a new one you should know for which purpose it will be used for. So if you are going to play heavy graphical games you should choose a CRT because they have commonly a high resolution screen so they can handle the graphical games easily and they are not very expensive. But if you don’t have much desk space you should choose a LCD with a high resolution screen. But these are much more expensive then a CRT.Here is a list of monitors when to use:
| Purpose | Much desk space | Monitor | Size | | Normal use like office use; surfing the internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, playing small games. | Yes | (flat) CRT | 17 inch | | Normal use like office use; surfing the internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, playing small games. | No | LCD | 15 or 17 inch | | Playing the newest graphical games, photo editing, programming. | Yes | (flat) CRT | 19 inch | | Playing the newest graphical games, photo editing, programming. | No | LCD | 17 or 19 inch | | Making CAD drawings, industrial programming, many applications open at once. | Yes | (flat) CRT | 21 inch or more | | Making CAD drawings, industrial programming, many applications open at once. | No | LCD | 21 inch or more |
