If you want to install this operating system, you must be sure that the hardware of the server meets the system requirements for this software. If you install it on a machine which doesn't, it will not work properly and you don't have a stable server. So be sure you install this software on a machine with the right system requirements.

Below you find the minimum system requirements for Windows Server 2003 using an Intel processor.

Of course you have to be sure that the hardware in the computer meets the system requirements for its purpose. For example if you use your server also as a print server, the machine needs extra LPT ports to connect several different printers.

Print server
Using a print server, users can use several on the server managed printers. If you use your server as a print server than the server has to spool and print the users print jobs. Then you must be sure you install:

  • Quite a large hard disk
  • Extra LPT ports, if there are several printers which needed to be attached to the server itself.

File server
A file server is a server for storage of user files and other files. If you are using the server as file server, than the clock speed and the amount of RAM memory not very important. But you have to install the following:

  • Three large hard disks
  • RAID-5 to prevent data loss at disk problems and for a quicker data transfer.
  • A tape unit or CD or DVD writer for making backups.
Communication server
A communication server is being used for:
  • Common access to the internet (proxy server)
  • To pass through the e-mail (mail server)
  • A internet connection with high bandwidth (web server)

If you use your server for these purposes, than there is constantly a lot of traffic with large files. These files also have to be transferred quickly. A machine with a quick processor is needed for these purposes. You have to install:

  • A quick processor
  • A lot of RAM memory
  • One ore more hard disks
  • An internet connection with high bandwidth.

Application server
At an application server a part of the client – server process takes place on the server itself. Therefore you have to be sure that the machine has a quick processor. And you have to install a lot of memory.
